Stresscon Participates in DIA Expansion Project

Denver International Airport’s terminal expansion project presented a number of key challenges when five gates were added to Concourse C. Precast concrete provided the best option for meeting project goals and was the best solution for the terminal project. The project had to be designed and built in a 24 month window, with work occurring only a few feet away from the terminal, service vehicles, and taxiing airplanes.

Stresscon Corporation, a member of the EnCon Companies, earned a Rolling Owner Controlled Insurance Program (ROCIP) safety award for their performance on this Denver International Airport (DIA) Concourse C Expansion project. Stresscon is the first company to receive the ROCIP award.

The ROCIP award was presented to Stresscon based on working nearly 67,000 labor hours without injury, and a (ZERO) Incident and DART rate for the year. Stresscon averaged 35 employees per day on site at the DIA project. The award was presented to the team for going above and beyond required measures on the site and working in challenging weather conditions including -22 degree days. The precast portion of the project was completed ahead of schedule. Certificates and awards were presented to the Stresscon team by Mary Connors, Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist II for DIA.

Morgan Lysohir, of Milender White Construction Co., the General Contractor for this project, spoke to the site crew regarding job site safety starting with extreme pre-planning and understanding of the project. “Your crew followed the initiated plan accordingly in order to ensure all safety standards were met on this high risk project site. We appreciate the effort you all made to ensure the project was safe, and how hard you all worked,” said Lysohir. The DIA Concourse C project was constructed mere feet from runways, planes, airport personnel, and travelers.

The DIA Concourse C Expansion project is a total precast structure including 565 precast pieces, and approximately 71,000 square feet. Stresscon participated in a collaborative design-build team approach including Wong Strauch Architects, Richard Weingardt Consultants, Inc., and Milender White Construction Co. The team incorporated post-tensioned precast moment frames as the primary lateral force resisting system, a unique lateral system in this region. Precast was selected for its key benefits in providing complementary aesthetics, plant based fabrication that minimized site congestion, quick erection, sustainable design attributes, and quick erection that reduced weather delays and helped ensure on-time completion.

New CSU Beam Form and Cage Materials

Denver, Colo. (March 3, 2017) – Stresscon Corporation has designed and donated a beam form and cage materials to precast concrete students in Colorado State University’s Concrete Design Program. Students in the CIVE 467 – Reinforced Concrete Design course have access to the precast beam form and cage materials in order to develop an understanding of how reinforcement is arranged inside the form and beam. This gives the students an interactive approach while working as a crew, a tool to help them better understand and interpret variables in design calculations.

Dr. Rebecca Atadero approached her precast industry contact, Greg Black, a retired precast designer, with the form idea. Stresscon was able to develop the idea into a teaching tool for the students. “After some graduate students at CSU participated in the PCI Big Beam contest and I got to watch them trying to tie together a rebar cage, I realized how much undergraduate students might benefit from the experience too”, says Atadero. She has split her class into groups of six students who visit the concrete lab to review beam production drawings, set up the form, and tie the rebar cage for the beam. “I am happy to see the students are asking good questions and seem to be enjoying themselves too”, she says.

The objective of the teaching form is to demonstrate the structural characteristics of the beam and the reinforcement design in a 3-D form for a direct and hands-on approach. The beam form and reinforcing materials were produced at Stresscon’s precast manufacturing plant in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This project highlights Stresscon’s focus on contributing teaching materials to students to increase awareness of precast products and design.

EnCon Construction Project Wins Tilt-Up Achievement Award

Denver, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2016) – Value Plastics, an EnCon project in Loveland, Colorado, is a winner of the Tilt-Up Achievement Award from the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA). Winners of this award represent the industry’s best tilt-up projects.  The awards program serves to promote and recognize members of the TCA, as well as furthering the awareness of the potential of tilt-up concrete construction.

The Value Plastics project will be featured in TILT-UPTODAY and employees will be presented with a plaque for this achievement at the Tilt-Up Awards Gala during the 2016 TCA Convention in Denver, Colorado on October 10.  All winners are also eligible to win the prestigious Excellence in Achievement designation that will be announced during the Awards Gala.

A collaborative design-build team including Golden Triangle Construction, Powers Brown Architecture, Peak Engineering, Inc., and EnCon Construction participated in creation of the 113,800 square foot project.  Tilt-up precast concrete was determined to be the most efficient method to fast-track this project. Insulated thermal panels were cast on site and the smaller solid wall panels were cast at EnCon’s precast concrete plant and delivered to the project site. After concrete production, all panels were erected over a 17 day period.
EnCon provided 95 pieces of 12 1/4″ insulated structural grey panels and solid structural grey panels, weighing up to 153,000 pounds.   Value Plastics is a high tech manufacturing facility that utilized insulated tilt wall panels to obtain a higher project R-value. Thermomass non-composite pins connect a 7 1/4″ structural wythe to a 3″ architectural wythe with 2″ of XPS insulation sandwiched in between.  These panels feature a board-form finish to accentuate specific building elements.

EnCon United Congratulates Stresscon Corporation on Award Winning Ft. Carson Project

Denver, Colo. (May 6, 2016) – Stresscon Corporation’s Fort Carson 13th CAB Barracks project has won a 2016 Rocky Mountain Chapter ACI Excellence in Concrete Award in the Public Project category.  The Excellence in Concrete Awards Program recognizes outstanding work and exemplary use of concrete in the construction community.  All award winners will be showcased at the Excellence in Concrete Awards program.

The 13th CAB Barracks project features six buildings, containing 15 inch thick insulated load-bearing precast/prestressed concrete panels that support a steel framed floor and roof system, and are designed to meet blast loading and anti-terrorist-force protection criteria.  The separate buildings consisted of 486 unique panels that were erected in approximately 15 weeks, resulting in timely completion and turnover to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

A collaborative design-build team including M.A. Mortenson, HDR Minneapolis, Structural Engineering Solutions, and Stresscon Corporation participated in creation of six buildings consisting of 207,700 square feet of precast concrete.  Precast was determined to be the most efficient method to fast-track this project with a 365 day design to occupancy schedule.  The panels were cast at a nearby plant, shipped to the project site, and quickly erected.  The significance of this unit’s mission, and the rapid pace of returning soldiers, required that new facilities be erected quickly to keep pace with the demand for services.
Stresscon provided 486 high performance, insulated non-composite wall panels with inset thin brick and acid etched architectural surfaces. The precast panels feature cast-in conventional clay thin brick accented with acid etched, architectural concrete banding. These panels were combined with fully acid-etched panels to accentuate specific building elements. The steady state R-value provided was 32, with the use of insulated non-composite wall panels over the entire precast panel area.
